AI Ways of Seeing

2023, The Stallery, Hong Kong
2022, NGO DEI, Czech Republic

The Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) employed in this project drew its foundational inspiration from Pablo Picasso’s 1913 collage, Bowl with Fruit, Violin, and Wineglass. The training data set was curated, encompassing a diverse array of images sourced from search engines, each depicting bowls with fruit, violins, and wineglasses. This choice of imagery directly references the thematic and compositional elements of Picasso’s work, bridging early 20th-century art with contemporary digital techniques.

The artworks generated by this GAN emerge through sophisticated image manipulation processes that challenge and expand our understanding of creative boundaries. This exploration is not merely technical but deeply interpretative, examining the comparative realms of machine learning and human artistic perception. By employing latent space interpolation within artificial neural networks, the series not only showcases the capabilities of modern technology but also invites viewers into an immersive dialogue between technological innovation and artistic interpretation.

This series serves as a profound investigation into the dynamics of visual interpretation, pushing the viewer to reconsider the essence of artistic creation and perception in the digital age. It fosters a deeper understanding of how artificial intelligence can both mirror and alter traditional artistic processes, thereby enriching the discourse on the convergence of art and technology.
